Merridia 2.0 by Luned Merridia 2.0 by Luned
Merridia is the capital of Mérindar, a very standard-fantasy (=european-like) country in Alvarania. It's quite important not only because its the capital and an important commercial town, but because the members of my rpg board seem to feel at home there quite much :)
Read more here: [link] (german)

Here's the older version: [link]
The river (which is now the canal crossing the city) was far too narrow in the older maps, as it's one of the longest rivers of the continent. I now compared it to the Elbe river in germany (about 2km wide at the river mouth). As I did not want to change the design of the city too much (the writers are used to it by now), I had to think of a way to keep the small "old" river while showing the "new" broad one. So that was my idea:
The small river course once was much broader (also about 2km) and covered the space where the southern part of the city later was built. Two hamlets were built north of the river on slightly higher ground (now Merridia and Kahnweil).
Eventually the river changed it's course to the north; the old course silted up and could no longer be used for fishing/merchant ships. The new river course is very shallow and has constantly changing river banks, so it was not suitable for shipping, too. The inhabitants of the villages began to build a canal where the old river course once was, drained the land where the southern part of Merridia now is and ended up with a navigable, strait canal which also is one of the reasons why Merridia is now a capital.

Spent about 20-25 hours on it. My computer nearly surrendered...

If you don't mind my asking, what program did you use to make this?

Stunning... I may never be able to do this but it's great to know that even with a program that some call outdated, you can make something like this! :iconawwwplz:

It's just a matter of practice, I suppose... and I don't think that a newer version of the program can outweigh this completely :)

Merridia is situated on a low hill and protected by a dike (and some magicians)... but nevertheless you're right, they have a good chance of getting wet feet every few years :D

This is amazing! I'm curious, did you have an estimate of the population of the town? I have trouble deciding how large a town should be for amounts of people.

Yes, it's really hard to estimate that. Merridia is supposed to have about 25.000 inhabitants. You may look at this thread at cartographers guild for some hints on calculating this number :) [link]

I would be glad if you could elaborate on that point. Did you create your houses before placing them (resolving the problem of texture orientation) ? It would be very nice of you.

I used bevel&emboss on the house shapes. The texture was used only in an attempt to make the roofs less uniform, more interesting.

I don't use any fancy techniques and quite simple standard brushes; the trick is to find the right blending options for all the layers ;) You may look for tutorials on www.cartographersguild.com, that's where I found the advice and tutorials which helped me develop my style. I don't think I will find the time to write a tutorial in the near future, sorry :/

Eigentlich hat das Ergebnis sehr wenig mit Zeichnen und viel mehr mit der Übung im Umgang mit Grafikprogrammen zu tun ;)

Great natural looking city. You deffinitely got the European vibe right, looks a bit like old Dublin too :) I really love how you can see the city evolve and grow and imagine how it'll sprawl in more time.

Yeah, that's what I wanted to show... how Merridia grows over it's borders and engulfs the village to the north. I'm glad I somehow managed it, thank you! :)

I am very curious how you would do that. What program do you use and how would you customize brushes and stuff? I am looking into making a city map or two but do not have the knowledge (and probably the tools) to do so.

I use Photoshop... and customizing brushes means just using some scattering etc. and blending options combined with textures from Genetica [link] nothing really special. Just take your time to try things out, once you found your personal way of doing things it's quite easy :)

although the temple is at the wrong palce according to me. invasions from the sea would like be to dangerous to make the temple to the coast.

The temple was built in a time when invasions from the sea were quite unlikely. And the position is probably not too bad even now, as the temple is on a hill and protected by cliffs, too :)
